Stadium Review - The Stadium Tour Revisited
Quest for 31 - The Machine in CharlotteThe city of Charlotte, North Carolina is a bustling urban metropolis that maintains the small town feel of the friendly southern states. I've always enjoyed my visits down there, especially when it comes to the world of professional sports as represented in the Carolinas. The people are friendly, the tailgating is exceptional, and the barbecue is top-notch. If there's one thing that can be said for Charlottte, those folks know how to throw a great NFL tailgate.

Anyway, I was in town for a short time and although I've already attended the Bank of America Stadium tour once before, I had my daughter, niece, and nephew with me this time and thought I might try to get a quick walkthough while in the neighborhood. It was a Monday, not a typical guided tour day, but the box office staff was still kind enough to take time out to show us around the stadium.

The Panthers at Bank of America StadiumThe first design elements that strikes you as you enter one of the gates at Bank of America Stadium are the massive black panther sculptures that guard the entrance areas as you approach the building. Weighing 2000 pounds each and standing eight feet tall, the panthers are perched on top of ten foot granite pedestals, providing an excellent photo opportunity. Not being one to pass up any photo opportunity, I wrangled the kids and set up my tripod.

Our tour began with a walk down to the field area as seen from the 100 level seating. At this time of the year, the grounds staff was resodding the field with a hybrid Bermuda natural grass surface that actually ranks as the #2 rated surface in the NFL as judged by the players themselves. Unfortunately, like most stadium tours in facilities preferring a natural grass playing surface, tour guests aren't allowed down on the field.  So we had to admire the work of the Bank of America Stadium grounds crew from afar. On other stadium tours, especially the ones that have a FieldTurf or AstroPlay synthetic surface, you can actually run around down on the field and test it out for yourself. That's one experience I can never seem to get enough of and it's an element that weighs heavily on my Stadium tour five star rating.

After a couple of photos we headed to the Carolina Panthers Luxury Suite area. The suite level at Bank of America Stadium has really done an effective job of integrating the game of football into its decor. The carpet is asto-turf green with football field yard lines and markers. A full offensive and defensive starting lineup is illustrated in the design on the carpet and they've even mounted a set of goal posts in the endzone area. Tabletops and chairs are then scattered over the area to allow for several gameday gathering spots for suite level ticket holders. I've been through many of the suite level areas in other stadiums, but the attention to detail in recreating an NFL field in this one was most impressive.

Next on the list was the press box to see where the local and national writers collect on gameday, followed by a trip to Suite 87. The owner of the Carolina Panthers is Jerry Richardson, a former NFL player who wore the number 87 when he played for the Johnny Unitas-led Baltimore Colts. Richardson's Suite 87 is the ultimate in Gameday Luxury. Leather recliners, a private bar area, and table top viewing areas overlook the field from the opposite side of the owners box itself. As a former player, unlike most owners who typically place their owner's box at the 50 yard line, Richardson prefers the endzone for his box as it provides the player perspective for football games.
A quick walk through the visitors locker room, including a stop in the trainer's area, was last on our list as we moved toward the conclusion of our tour. Special thanks to Bobby Trimnal for taking the time to show us around. I look forward to my return to Charlotte for my next Carolina Panther adventure.
